Last week, the AIA awarded its first COTE PLUS award to the Aidlin Darling-designed th Street in San Francisco. The award recognizes projects that are not only transformed by sustainable practices and design, but continue to evolve and respond to the existing design over time. That’s on top of a 2010 COTE Top Ten Green Project award for transforming the former warehouse into LEED-certified mixed use offices and restaurant. Architect firm, Aidlin Darling Design has completed The Windhover Contemplative Center on the campus of Stanford University, which serves as a spiritual retreat for students, faculty, and staff.

"There is an innate required intimacy to the house that you usually find in European or Latin American homes," says Aidlin. "It was wonderful to address the three-generation urban home as a design problem, where every square inch of the house is necessarily utilitarian."

Each year, the city hosts Palm Springs Modernism Week to promote its midcentury heritage and its preservation. The architects describe this intermediate area as a "place to break bread, and capture both sunrise and sunset as well as breezes rising up the hillside and through the house". Part of Aidlin Darling Design's brief was to protect the existing Pinyon trees that were found on site. This species of pine is native to the Southwestern United States, and can have a lifespan of up to 600 years. San Francisco firm Aidlin Darling Design has completed a low-slung home in California's Palm Desert that is intended to contrast the boulders and trees found in its remote setting.

"The materials of the home were chosen to quietly contrast with the lighter palette of the desert landscape," the studio said. "The interior is a collage of concrete, wood, stone, and steel, each responding to its immediate application to maximise durability while providing the home with warmth and a soulful nesting quality." The three floors are connected by a central, steel, switchback stair with floating wood treads that nestle between a three-story plaster wall and a three-story mahogany cabinet. "The clients requested the main stair be a heroic and sculptural experience," says Aidlin.
Projects
In addition to the covered exterior spaces, the home also has concrete walls that form courtyards around the Pinyon trees. His goal was to create a modern architecture firm that maximizes the intrinsic potential of its location while meeting each client’s specific lifestyle, business or institutional needs. His range and variety of projects are diverse with a focus on spectacular private residences in California’s best and most affluent neighborhoods quintessential, luxury indoor/outdoor contemporary architect. From the street, it appears as a modest, opaque box, clad in vertical strips of cedar (a “non-facade,” as Aidlin describes it). The front door is set as far away from the road as possible, so visitors travel along a path that runs nearly the full length of the building. This extended entry sequence was inspired by Chinese temples, where a progression of garden walls helps the mind transition from the bustle of the world.

The Other Side is his first solo album in almost two decades, a seemingly simple 12-track set that arrived only after Burnett had treated himself to some new guitars.

These courtyards, coupled with the expansive glass wall to the east, allow visitors to view the paintings without accessing the building, effectively creating a sanctuary for the Stanford community day and night. The east and west facades feature expansive windows to capture the dramatic views, while the north and south facades have minimal apertures to maximize privacy. The steel brise soleil that extrudes from the front and rear facades of the house shields the interior from the sun at various times of day, as well as providing privacy from neighboring buildings.
His vocals are husky and downbeat but they hold tension and drama, and come enlivened by the voices of folk duo Lucius and others, with sumptuous guitar playing from old compadres; there are fountains of picking and twanging. He Came Down, a Christian tribute, opens proceedings, after which love and mortality prove dancing partners. A ghostly lover awaits his partner on Waiting for You, while The Town That Time Forgot and Little Darling appear to look back on life together from, well, the other side of the album title. In the main space, heavy rammed-earth walls, which range up to 2 feet in thickness, highlight the sedimentary layers of the soil that was used to form them. “We thought about the precedent of a cabinet of curiosities,” says Kent Chiang, principal and project architect at San Francisco–based Aidlin Darling Design. The firm reinterpreted 17th-century vitrines housing taxidermy and astrolabes into a 120-foot-long, S-shaped, compartmentalized, interactive display of the latest Google devices. Operable windows and doors on the east and west facades allow for effective cross ventilation across the narrow footprint of the home. The clients were also interested in incorporating sustainable architectural strategies where it made sense. The brise soleil controls light and heat gain, deep overhangs offer passive solar control, and cross-ventilation is enabled by the narrow footprint and operable windows and doors.
The stair is quite porous, directly connecting the dining room, the study, and the master suite when desired. One of the study nooks on the second floor—adjacent to the kitchen and dining area—looks through the stair toward the front garden. The vertical layout of the home is driven by the relationship between the three generations that make up the household.
Oliveira was pleased by the final determination, a former parking lot bordered by a grove of old oak trees, adjacent to student housing. He died in 2012, well before Aidlin Darling Design had been selected as architect. However, his son Joe Oliveira thinks he would have been “overjoyed” by the result. “I know he would have loved the soft quality of the lighting and the calmness of the building,” he says.

On the occasion of his retirement in 1995, he gave a talk about his vision for a contemplative space that could provide some moments of quiet respite.
